P-xylene is oxidised to p-toluic acid by oxygen or air at 130-190C in water as solvent and cobalt salt or combinations with salts of Ce, Mn as catalyst. The pressure is sufficient to keep water in liquid state. P-toluic acid is filtered off and unreacted p-xylene is recovered and recycled, The catalyst is recovered from the aqueous phase and is recycled.

The weight ratio of cobalt to manganese is from about 10 to about 400 and the process provides improved conversion and reduces the formation of carbon oxides.

The amount of cobalt used is from 1,800-6,000 ppm, with respect to the total weight of the liquid, and the weight ratio of Co:Mnt is 40 to about 400. The precipitated terephthalic acid may be purified by further oxidation reactions, without the need for hydrogenation.
